What is HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation?

The HLTAID009 CPR first aid course provides students with the practical skills and essential knowledge required to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to a casualty in a genuine medical emergency. Students are trained to apply the DRSABCD procedure to assess the scene of a potential medical emergency and provide an emergency first aid response – contacting emergency services, performing CPR, and attaching and operating an automated external defibrillator (AED) if needed.

They know how to follow established first aid procedures to minimise risks to themselves and others, and how to hand over to emergency services and provide a verbal assessment of the situation.

Students are given the chance to observe and attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the course, with the chance to practise on both an adult resuscitation manikin AND an infant resuscitation manikin. They will also gain practical experience using an AED.

The course is fully compliant with all australian resuscitation council (ARC) guidelines (relevant to CPR training) and recognised by governing medical bodies across Australia.

What if I've been asked to do HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or another older course?

The Australian Resuscitation Council works hard to ensure first aid CPR courses in Australia follow the most up-to-date first aid procedures. As such, the standard is often updated.

You may find some employers or reference materials require you to hold or acquire an older equivalent of the HLTAID009 course, such as HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Some of the older first aid codes and equivalent courses include:

  • HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTCPR211A Perform CPR
  • HLTCPR201B Perform CPR
  • HLTCPR201A Perform CPR

In each of these cases, HLTAID009 is now the current standard of CPR first aid certificate and should be accepted in all situations where HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation or another older equivalent is asked for.

How long does a CPR first aid certificate last?

According to Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, a HLTAID009 certificate is valid for 12 months from the successful completion of your course. After this, you will need to attend a CPR refresher course to keep your qualifications current.

You should note that if you have completed HLTAID009 as part of another qualification – such as HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, or HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting – the CPR component is still only valid for 12 months, despite the rest of the qualification remaining valid for a longer period (3 years).

Does Solis College run any other first aid related training?

Although HLTAID009 provides students with the skills to potentially save lives in a cardiac arrest emergency, you may want (or need) to make those skills part of a larger first aid toolkit. Fortunately, while HLTAID009 can be taken on its own, Solis College also provides a range of other first aid courses which include CPR skills as part of a comprehensive first aid package.

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

The Provide First Aid certificate is the standard first aid course for the majority of Australian workplaces and is a basic requirement for staff in a vast range of workplaces and professional roles. The course teaches the essentials of applying CPR and using the DRSABCD protocol, the essentials of basic emergency life support (including the use of an AED, or automated external defibrillator), and first aid management of everything from minor bites and stings to wound bleeding control. The course fully follows all ARC guidelines relevant to the provision of first aid and CPR in Australia and is recognised by employers and peak industry bodies across Australia.

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

Essential for those working in the teaching or childcare industries, the HLTAID012 course covers the full content of the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid qualification (which it includes), and also additional content specific to working with children and young people. This includes additional training on asthma and anaphylaxis basic care, providing first aid to children and infants, and the paperwork needed when providing medical care to minors. The course follows all relevant ARC guidelines.

Pathways to employment

Having first aid skills such as a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is valuable when seeking employment for several reasons. Firstly, certain roles and career paths are required to have training in CPR, as the nature of the work means the odds of being a first responder in a medical emergency are quite high.

Second, many employers value having staff with first aid knowledge, even outside the official requirements of an official first aid officer. Knowing you have the essential knowledge required to quickly intervene in a cardiac arrest emergency may be what gives you an advantage over other potential employees with similar qualifications.

Lastly, having completed a CPR training course shows employers that you’re not simply interested in doing the bare minimum to get by in your professional role. Rather, you’re committed to the welfare of those around you and willing to step up in an emergency. That might be what gives your resume the edge you need.

And of course, while you hope you’ll never need to use your CPR training, you are literally learning how to save the lives of those around you. If someday a friend or loved one suffers a cardiac arrest near you, CPR may turn out to be one of the most valuable skills you’ll ever learn.
