What is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting?

The HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting qualification provides students with the approved first aid training needed to work as a teacher, educator, or childcare worker, and render medical assistance in a medical emergency. The course provides students with the skills and knowledge required to provide an emergency first aid response to infants and children, and treat a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.

Graduates know how to provide minors with medical care appropriately and follow established first aid principles as laid out by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian peak clinical bodies.

The course includes all the content of a standard first aid training certificate, with additional learning to cover the specialised training requirements of those working in educational and care settings, including extra asthma and anaphylaxis training, and instruction on how to recognise signs of injury and illness in children or infants.

Does HLTAID011 include CPR & Basic Emergency Life Support (BELS)?

Yes, the HLTAID011 course includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic emergency life support (also known as CPR & BELS) as part of the course. It provides training in DRSABCD (the protocol for recognising and responding to possible cardiac arrest), performing CPR, and use of an AED (automated external defibrillator).

The training is fully in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines (ARC), as well as all relevant state and territory legislation.

What does HLTAID011 cover?

The primary purpose of the HLTAID011 training is to allow students to recognise and provide an emergency first aid response to critical life-threatening medical incidents such as cardiac arrest, stroke and anaphylactic shock.

The student learns how to use established first aid principles to care for a casualty until emergency services arrive and take over.

They will also receive specific training in providing first aid to infants and children, including:

  • Signs and symptoms of acute illness in children and infants
  • Recognition of signs or symptoms requiring an immediate ambulance response
  • Emergency action plans for known medical conditions, including Asthma and Anaphylaxis
  • Age-appropriate communication and distraction techniques
  • Accommodating for basic physiological differences in children

The HLTAID012 course is not just one certificate. Successful completion of the course will award the graduating student with four separate qualifications. These are:

The time taken to complete the online component may vary, but students should allow a full day to work through the material and complete the online assessment.

Can I get credit or RPL for course content I've studied before?

If you’ve completed some part of the HLTAID012 course – either as part of another qualification, or as part of a stand-alone training course (such as the HLTAID009 CPR first aid course), then you should talk to us about a credit transfer – you may be granted credit for that learning, and not be required to complete that component of the course.

Are there any entry requirements for the HLTAID012 training?

There are no prerequisites for the HLTAID012 first aid course in terms of required prior learning.

However, there are some basic criteria that students must meet before being allowed to take part in the training. In particular, potential students must be:

  • Physically capable of taking part in the training – You must be able to perform uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (breaths and compressions) on an adult resuscitation manikin lying on the floor for two full minutes with no assistance.
  • Able to communicate in written and spoken English, use common digital technology, and apply basic numeracy.
  • Aged 18 or older.

Do I need any equipment to complete the course?

While Solis College provides all the first aid equipment and training resources needed for the course, students will need access to a few common digital resources – some of which could be borrowed for the duration of the training.

To take part in the course, you must have:

    • A laptop with WiFi connectivity and access to the internet
    • Access to current Microsoft Office software, or a close equivalent
    • A personal email address (this can be a free account from a provider such as Google or Yahoo)

Your first aid trainer will use a variety of methods to assess your learning progress throughout the course, including:

What if I've been asked to do HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting instead?

HLTAID012 is not the first version of the childcare first aid used in Australia, and in some cases, people may be asked about holding or be expected to complete the older qualification – HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting.

Whatever the reason for this, the HLTAID012 first aid certificate is now the current standard for educational settings. As such, it should be accepted by all legitimate educational institutions and workplaces in place of the older qualification.

What sort of jobs require a childcare first aid certificate?

The HLTAID012 training is specifically tailored to fulfil the mandated first aid requirements of teachers, educators and childcare workers. As such, it is required training for the following careers.

  • Primary & Secondary School Teachers
  • Early Childhood Educators
  • Kindergarten Teachers
  • Childcare Workers
  • OSHC Staff

In addition, the comprehensive first aid knowledge provided by the course with its specific focus on children and infants makes it very beneficial for anyone working with or caring for children – including members of child-focussed community groups, or simply parents wishing to be fully prepared for a first aid emergency.

How long is HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting valid for?

The HLTAID012 certificate is valid for 3 full years from the date of issue, as are the HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificates included as part of the qualification.

The CPR component – HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is valid for a total of 12 months from the date of issue, as recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

Does Solis College run any other first aid related training?

If you’re looking to get first aid qualifications but you’re not specifically working with children and young people, Solis College has a range of more general first aid course options.

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

The Provide First Aid certificate is the standard first aid course for the majority of Australian workplaces and is a basic requirement for staff in a vast range of workplaces and professional roles. The course prepares students to provide an emergency first aid response to a medical incident. It teaches the fundamentals of applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the DRSABCD protocol, the essentials of basic emergency life support (including the use of an AED, or automated external defibrillator), and first aid management of everything from minor bites and stings to wound bleeding control. The course fully follows all ARC guidelines relevant to the provision of first aid and CPR in Australia and is recognised by employers and peak industry bodies across Australia.

HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

If your workplace specifically requires training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – or if your HLDAID009 certificate has lapsed and you need a refresher, this short course covers all the essentials of CPR. Over the course of a few hours, students learn to recognise and assess a potential cardiac arrest situation using the DRSABCD process, apply CPR effectively, correctly attach and operate an automated external defibrillator (AED), and hand over to emergency services when they arrive.

Pathways to employment

If you are looking to work in the education or childcare sector, HLTAID012 is mandatory training for many roles.

Even where this is not the case, having your childcare first aid certificate gives you a distinct edge when searching for a job working with children and young people.

And as the course also includes HLTAID011 – the standard first aid certificate in Australia – the training can be beneficial in a wide variety of industries and workplaces.
