What Our Students Say About Us

How is the course presented?

Solis College uses a blended, hybrid format for our CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course – combining both online learning and more traditional face-to-face instruction in a classroom setting. The in-class component is led by our highly qualified trainers, and allows students to work in a group context to discuss concepts and work through hypothetical scenarios.

The self-paced learning is accessed through our online student portal and allows students to work through much of the course content and complete online assessments remotely, from the comfort of home and at your own pace.

Students may find themselves learning through the following methods:

  • In-class trainer demonstrations and hands-on practice.
  • Traditional lecture-style classroom instruction
  • Class group discussion, case studies, and hypothetical exercises.
  • Online training materials and learning resources

How long will it take to complete the CHC50121 course?

The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a high level study course, and the qualification reflects a full two years (104 weeks) of study.

This includes all classes, assignments, orientation sessions, holiday periods, and final assessments.

What other courses could help me find work in this field?

If you’re interested in a diploma in early childhood education, but you need to start with the groundwork and learn the essentials of working in early childhood first, you might be interested in some of the other courses Solis College has on offer:

CHC30121 – Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

This course equips students to work in childcare or early childhood education environments such as kindergartens and childcare centres. Students learn to safely and ethically care for children of a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds, working within an approved learning framework.

They support children’s play and learning while maintaining their wellbeing, safety, and healthy development. Graduates can operate with other educators as part of a team, or work independently, and can operate within set rules and guidelines.

Pathways to employment

If you’re looking to build your career and get well established in the early childhood sector, the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a superb choice of qualification that opens doors to a range of roles throughout the industry.

It also has a well-deserved reputation for being the final qualification you’ll ever need – with most graduates moving into the workforce after graduating, and very few undertaking additional training. In fact, in 2023, Jobs and Skills Australia reported the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care as having the third lowest rate of progression to other VET training – less than 1% of graduates went on to study additional vet qualifications.

While some students (around 10% continued into University study) this still means that nearly 90% of CHC50121 graduates chose to make the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care the last step in their educational road – they’d got to where they wanted to be.

With a steady flow of work, a range of solid career prospects, and daily opportunities to make a difference in the lives of young people, doing a diploma in early childhood education is an excellent way to take your career in a stable, satisfying, and rewarding direction.

How much time will I need to invest each week?

A diploma in early childhood education is a full-time commitment, and students should be sure to allow at least 20 hours each week to attend classes, work through training resources and complete assignments. The actual time required each week may fluctuate from student to student, depending on their work pace and any prior learning they may have.

It should be noted that the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course includes a mandatory work placement component, requiring students to spend 280 hours in a professional early childhood setting.

This component of the training will generally involve a much larger time commitment – normally the equivalent of a full-time workload in the early childhood industry.

Can I get RPL for subjects I've studied before?

If you’ve worked in a field closely aligned to early childhood education and care, or you have transferable skills or workplace training relevant to what you’ll be studying in the chc50121 diploma, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL) for your course. This would formally acknowledge the knowledge and skills you already have, meaning you may not need to attend some portions of the training.

In some cases, this may allow you to complete your diploma in a shorter time frame – depending on the course schedule.

Similarly, if you’ve completed another related course which included training units that are either taught in the early childhood diploma, or able to be counted as elective units, you may be eligible for a credit transfer – granting you credit for those units. Again, this might allow you to finish your course in a shorter time.

If you believe you have skills, training or experience that may be relevant to a diploma in early childhood education, you should talk to our enrolments team to discuss your options.

Some FAQs By Our Students

All specialised equipment or learning resources needed for the course are provided by Solis College at our learning venue. However, students will require a few common items of technology and digital resources to take part in the training. For the duration of the course, students will need access to:

  •  A laptop computer with
    • WiFi Access
    • A reliable internet connection (either at home, or at an easily accessible location such as a public library)
    • Up-to-date Microsoft Office software, or a close equivalent (such as Google Docs or LibreOffice).
  •  A personal email address for communication with the College - this can be an account from a free email provider such as Yahoo or Google.
  • A working smartphone with an active SIM card.

Solis College uses a range of different assessment methods to assess the progress of students in the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course. This helps to avoid over-dependence on any one form of assessment, allowing us to support students with a range of different learning styles and academic strengths.

Students might be assessed through:

  •  Online learning assessments
  •  Written tests, quizzes and other assignments
  •  Trainer observation during practical skill demonstrations and in-class discussions
  •  Individual tasks and take-away assignments
  •  Group assessment activities and collaborative projects

Successful completion of a training unit will require a satisfactory result in each assessment for the unit.

If you were unable to successfully complete any of the assessments for your training, this does not yet mean you will be unable to complete the relevant training module and graduate the course. Rather, for each unsatisfactory result you will be given one opportunity to re-attempt the assessment and improve your result. You will only be marked unsuccessful in the unit if you receive an unsatisfactory result on this second attempt.

While this will most likely prevent you from graduating from the course on the original expected date, you should note that you will only need to retake the specific unit or units you were unsuccessful in to be eligible to graduate (provided you receive a successful result when re-attempting the module).

The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is an accredited course under the National Register of Vocational Education and Training. It's provided by a recognised Australian RTO, and meets the requirements of all relevant regulatory industry bodies.

What this means is that when doing your Diploma with Solis College, you can be confident it will be recognised by early childhood educators and workplaces throughout Australia.

As the standards for VET training packages are updated on a semi-regular basis, qualifications are regularly updated and replaced by new equivalent training packages. Because of this, it is sometimes possible that a qualified childcare worker or educator may be asked if they hold an older version of the early childhood diploma, such as the CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

This is generally due to employers working with outdated information or older reference material. In any case, students should be aware that the CHC50121 course is the most current training package of its kind, and has now officially replaced those older courses in all official contexts.

Some of the older qualifications now replaced by the CHC50121 diploma include:

  • CHC50113 - Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • CHC50908 - Diploma of Children's Services (Early childhood education and care)
  • CHC50302 - Diploma of Children's Services

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care can open the door to a wide variety of roles and career paths. Whether you're a long-term childcare worker looking to take your career forward, or new to the industry and keen to make a positive impact, the qualification opens doors to a range of specialist and leadership roles within the education and care sector.

Some of the jobs and career opportunities open to CHC50121 graduates include:

  • Early Childhood educator
  • Childcare worker
  • Educational leadership
  • Outside school hours coordinator
  • Vacation care coordinator
  • Playgroup supervisor
  • Kindergarten Teacher
  • Teacher
  • Childcare Centre Manager
  • Educational consultant
