What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?

Provide First Aid is the national standard for professional first aid training in the workplace. It’s a comprehensive first aid course that trains students to recognise medical emergencies and provide appropriate first aid until emergency services arrive on-site to take over. It also equips students with the first aid skills to respond to a wide range of non-critical injuries, such as burns, fractures, minor wounds, and spider bites.

Previously known by names such as “HLTAID003” and “Senior First Aid”, the HLTAID011 is the most up-to-date standard in workplace first aid training and is accepted in most workplaces and professional contexts.

Why should I do my HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course with Solis College?

Solis College’s mission is to provide our students with excellent, affordable training, giving them the knowledge and skills to thrive in their chosen career. Our vision is to become one of Australia’s leading RTOs by providing exceptional training and outstanding service to our students – both local and international. We love seeing students develop their skills, explore new career paths and opportunities, and reach their full potential.

We’re also highly experienced CRICOS providers, and passionate about seeing people from different cultures, languages and backgrounds equipped with the skills to work and thrive here in Australia

Does HLTAID011 include CPR & Basic Emergency Life Support (BELS)?

Yes, the HLTAID011 course includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic emergency life support (also known as CPR & BELS) as part of the course. It provides training in DRSABCD (the protocol for recognising and responding to possible cardiac arrest), performing CPR, and use of an AED (automated external defibrillator).

The training is fully in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines (ARC), as well as all relevant state and territory legislation.

What does HLTAID011 cover?

The primary purpose of the HLTAID011 training is to allow students to recognise and provide an emergency first aid response to critical life-threatening medical incidents such as cardiac arrest, stroke and anaphylactic shock.

The student learns how to use established first aid principles to care for a casualty until emergency services arrive and take over.

How is the course presented?

The course is delivered as a hybrid of self-paced study and in-class instruction. Before the in-class training commences, students will have access to downloadable online learning resources which you can work through at your own pace – you just need to complete the online knowledge assessment quiz at least 24 hours before your training session commences.

Then, students will attend a one-day face-to-face training session as part of a class, working with one of our highly qualified instructors and learning practical skills through hands-on experience. Our training rooms are fully equipped with all the relevant equipment you’ll need, and our trainers have years of experience in the industry.

How long will it take to complete the HLTAID011 course?

You should allow for around two days for the course. One day to work through the self-paced online learning materials, and then a full day for the face-to-face training session.

Make sure you allow enough time (and start early enough) to complete the self-paced learning and online knowledge assessment quiz before your in-class training.

Where is the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course recognised?

Solis College is a registered training organisation within Australia, and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is an official training package under the National Register of Vocational Education and Training. It is the most widely accepted first aid qualification in Australia and is accepted across all states and territories. Our training is fully in line with the recommendations of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

Some workplaces – such as hospitals and schools – may have additional first aid training requirements. But even in these instances, HLTAID011 will generally be one component of the required training. This means a student who has their Provide First Aid certificate will often be eligible to receive recognised prior learning for their course.

Are there any entry requirements for the HLTAID011 course?

To take part in the Provide First Aid course, students must:

  • Be at least 18 years old (the minimum age for the course).
  • Be competent with written and spoken English, numeracy, and digital technology.
  • Be physically fit and able enough to kneel on the floor and provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (both chest compressions and breaths) to a training manikin for at least two minutes.

Do I need any equipment to complete the course?

To access the course resources and the online knowledge quiz (which must be completed prior to the training), you’ll need access to a computer or laptop with an internet connection.

Other than that, all the materials, resources and first aid equipment you’ll need to complete the course – including an adult resuscitation manikin for CPR training – will be provided on-site. All you need to bring is you.

How is the course assessed?

The course is assessed through a mixture of written and practical assessment. In addition to the online knowledge assessment, the trainers work with each student during the face-to-face training, giving a practical demonstration of first aid techniques such as CPR and then allowing students to practice, while providing feedback and assessing their practical skills.

Students will also be presented with simulated first aid scenarios, where they will need to apply their knowledge and provide an appropriate first aid response. They will also be required to complete an incident report form based on the simulation.

How long does a first aid certificate last?

The HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course is valid for three years from the successful completion

of your course – as defined by ARC guidelines. At that point, you’ll need to do a first aid refresher to keep your certification current.

The one exception to this is the CPR component of the course – HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The ARC guidelines recommend that CPR training be undertaken every 12 months to remain current. Fortunately, it is possible to take a HLTAID009 cpr refresher course as stand-alone training – meaning you don’t need to re-take a full first aid course every year.

How will doing HLTAID011 Provide First Aid training help me?

The Provide First Aid course is the default training requirement of most professional workplaces and roles that require first aid certification. As such, having your first aid certificate will often put you one step closer to being ready to start in a range of professional roles.

It also equips you with the skills and knowledge to potentially save lives – providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or other life saving first aid to a person suffering from a cardiac arrest or similarly life-threatening condition. Don’t be left at a loss for what to do if a friend or family turns out to be the next medical emergency.
