What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid training equips students with the skills and knowledge they’ll need to provide first aid assistance in a medical emergency or incident. The course prepares students to care for someone suffering an injury or illness, when and how to call for medical assistance, and what to do until they arrive.

Students will learn how to use the DRSABCD procedure to assess a potential medical emergency, how and when to apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and other vital first aid equipment. They’ll also learn how to treat a diverse range of illnesses and injuries of varying severity, from life-threatening conditions like anaphylactic shock or cardiac arrest to minor issues such as minor cuts and bruises.

The course follows all the guidelines laid out by peak Australian clinical bodies such as the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC), the National Asthma Council, Safe Work Australia, the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA), and the Epilepsy Foundation.

Why should I choose Solis College for first aid training?

At Solis, we’ve set ourselves the goal of becoming one of the leading RTOs in Australia, not through advertising or aggressive marketing, but by ensuring our students receive high-quality training, exceptional service, and an outstanding overall training experience.

We do what we can to help each of our students advance their careers and improve their lives. One of our biggest delights is when past students drop in and let us know how they’ve been going, where their new skills have taken them, and how we helped them get there. That’s why we do this.

A few of the ways we put students at the centre of everything we do include…

  • Running classes outside of business hours – on weekends and weeknights – to cater for students with complex lives and time commitments.
  • Ensuring our trainers are all highly qualified, professional, and very approachable.
  • Providing all our training also as CRICOS courses – meaning we cater for international students as well as domestic.
  • Ensuring students have access to all the specialised first aid equipment students will need to become fully certified.

What will I learn in the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course?

The course provides students with comprehensive training on a wide variety of medical conditions, allowing them to recognise, assess, and provide essential first aid for most common injuries and illnesses. Some of the conditions students are trained to treat include:

Upon successfully completing the course, students will be awarded three separate first aid qualifications:

  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 – Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid

How is the course presented?

Solis College provides our Provide First Aid training in a blended format. This means the course combines face-to-face training with an expert instructor with elements of online learning – which you can complete at your own pace from the privacy of home.

This online component allows students to fit much of the training around their own schedule – which is particularly helpful if you have a lot of commitments and not much time available.

The in-person component of the course is presented by one of our veteran instructors as a day-long training seminar, with practical demonstrations and plenty of hands-on experience with things like CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). There will also be ample time for you to put your trainer to the test by asking any questions you may have.

Students may learn through:

  • Direct demonstrations with opportunity for hands-on practice
  • Conventional classroom-style learning
  • Online learning resources and assessments
  • Written tests and assignments
  • Class simulations and hypothetical scenarios

Does the HLTAID011 course take long to complete?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid training typically takes around two days to complete. One of these days will be spent in class at the face-to-face seminar. However, before this, students will need to complete the self-paced learning component of the course.

These online learning resources and assessments will be completed at the pace you choose – which may vary from student to student. However, it’s recommended that students set aside a full day to work through the material before your scheduled in-class session.

Will I get recognition for elements of the training I've already completed?

In some cases a student may have completed some component of the HLTAID011 training before beginning the full course with Solis College – this is most common with the HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation unit, which can be done as a standalone course.

In such circumstances, you should talk to our enrolments team, as you may not be required to complete that portion of the training.

Do I need to meet any entry requirements to take part in HLTAID011 training?

HLTAID011 has no formal requirements in terms of prior training.

However, you will need to meet some general criteria to be able to enrol with Solis College. To take part in the course, you will need to be:

  • A minimum of 18 years old.
  • Capable of performing a full 2 minutes of unassisted single rescuer CPR (chest compressions and breaths) on a training manikin while kneeling on the floor.
  • Fluent with basic numeracy and common digital technology, and have a working knowledge of written and spoken English.

Is there any equipment I'll need to study the course?

The equipment and resources you’ll need to use during the course – such as CPR manikins and training model AEDs – are all provided by Solis College at the training venue. The only resources you’ll need to provide yourself are a few items of common digital technology. You’ll need to have:

  • A smartphone or mobile with a working SIM card.
  • A laptop with WiFi capability and internet access.
  • Current Microsoft Office software (or a close equivalent)
  • A personal email address – which can be a free account from an online service such as Yahoo) or Google.

How is the course assessed?

Students are assessed through a range of methods, allowing for a variety of different learning styles. To complete the course, you will need to achieve a satisfactory result in each assessment, which may include:

  • Conventional written tests and quizzes
  • Online assessments
  • In-person by the instructor during practical exercises

Where can I expect the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate to be recognised?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is an official vocational education and training (VET) module laid out by the National Register of Vocational Education and Training, and taught by a fully accredited RTO. It is also the current Australian standard for workplace first aid training. Your HLTAID011 certificate will be accepted by all governing medical industry bodies and major employers throughout Australia.

If I've been asked to do HLTAID003 Provide First Aid training, is this the same thing?

In some circumstances, you may be asked (generally by older corporate reference material or employment paperwork) to obtain a HLTAID003 Provide First Aid certificate or another older standard of first aid training. This is generally due to out-of-date information.

The HLTAID011 certificate is the current official standard for workplace first aid, and (according to the National Register of Vocational Education and Training), now supersedes the older courses. This means that it will be accepted as the updated version of that older training in almost all official and workplace contexts.

Some of the qualifications superseded by HLTAID011 include:

  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • HLTFA311A Apply first aid
  • HLTFA301C Apply first aid
  • HLTFA301B Apply first aid
  • HLTFA1A Apply basic First Aid

Note that this is also true of the two additional certificates included in the HLTAID011 training – HLTAID009 and HLTAID010. These certificates will also be accepted in place of their older equivalents, such as HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support.

What professional roles will a Provide First Aid certificate help me in?

Although it won’t generally qualify you for any specific job on its own, having a first aid certificate is a useful addition to your skills toolkit which can improve your value as an employee – as well as provide valuable life skills should you find yourself in any kind of medical emergency

Some of the careers and more general roles where  first aid certification is valuable include:

  • First responders: Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Fire Fighters, Health Care Workers, etc.
  • Other industries: Office Workers, Government, Tradespeople, Factory Workers, etc.
  • Volunteers: social and sporting events, etc.
  • General public: Grandparents, Mums and Dads

When will my first aid certificate expire?

The expiration dates for first aid qualifications follow the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council and other Australian peak clinical bodies. According to those recommendations, your first aid certificates will remain valid for the following durations:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid – 36 months (3 years)
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support – 36 months (3 years)
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation – 12 months (1 year)

To remain current for each certificate, you will need to undertake a first aid refresher course before your certificate expires. You should note that although HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation expires sooner than the other certificates, it can be taken as a stand-alone refresher course.

Do you run any other types of first aid course near me in Strathfield?

Although for most people, the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course provides everything they need to prepare them for medical emergencies and official first aid duties, perhaps your first aid training needs are slightly more specific. Fortunately, Solis College has other first aid training on offer at our Strathfield venue.

HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

If your HLTAID009 certificate has expired or your workplace has a specific requirement for CPR training, this single-day course provides students with the knowledge and skills to use cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a medical emergency. Within the course of a single day (which covers both a two-hour face-to-face practical skills seminar and time to complete the online learning), students are trained to use DRSABCD protocol to assess an unresponsive casualty, request medical assistance, apply CPR when appropriate, and hand over to medical professionals on their arrival.

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

For those working in childcare or education, HLTAID012 provides all the first aid training for professional accreditation. The course includes all the content of the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate (which is also awarded to the student when the course is complete) but also includes additional content for students working professionally minors – including additional training in the treatment of asthma and anaphylaxis, specific training on first aid for children and infants, and details on the additional paperwork required in a school or childcare context.

Pathways to employment

First aid and CPR training are an incredibly valuable skill to have in your toolkit when you’re seeking employment, and there are a wide variety of ways such skills add value to your resume.

For starters, many professional positions that aren’t specifically focused on medical care still have a requirement of first aid certification – including security and event management type roles. Although some positions may still hire staff without the qualifications (expecting that they’ll complete them before commencing work), having your first aid certificate complete and ready to go before you get to the interview may give you an edge over other candidates with similar experience.

In positions where first aid training isn’t required, it may still open up opportunities within a workplace for positions of greater responsibility – such as first aid officer or fire warden.

And of course, even when there’s no formal requirement for first aid qualifications, many employers may prefer having first aid trained staff on hand in their team. A 2017 study by the Red Cross showed that only around 1 in 20 Australians have the formal training to respond in a medical emergency. Why not make yourself one of those select few, so your co-workers rest just a little bit easier when you’re there?
