This unit provides students with the essential knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a first aid incident or life-threatening medical emergency. Students will learn to apply first aid procedures in an emergency, and how and when to seek assistance.
Graduates will know how to assess a casualty using the DRSABCD process, how to apply CPR and provide basic emergency life support, and use of essential first aid equipment such as an automated external defibrillator (AED).
They’ll also be equipped with the first aid skills to treat a wide range of medical issues ranging from minor skin injuries to life-threatening conditions such as cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock.
The course is fully compliant with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and the recommendations of other peak clinical bodies within Australia.
Solis College has a mission to be one of Australia’s leading RTOs. The way we want to achieve that is by providing each of our students with an outstanding training experience that equips them with new skills, and helps them progress their career and improve their situation. We love having past students drop in and tell us how they’re thriving. A few of the ways that we put students first are:
During the course, you’ll be trained to use established first aid principles to recognise and treat a wide range of medical conditions, and to provide first aid assistance in a genuine medical emergency. You’ll learn how to provide appropriate treatment for:
The HLTAID011 actually provides students with three separate qualifications upon completion. Successful students will be officially certified in:
The HLTAID011 Provide First Aid training is normally a two-day course. The face-to-face component of the training is a full-day session that takes place at our fully equipped training facility under the guidance of one of our expert trainers, with plenty of chance for hands-on practice and questions as you go.
The remainder of the course is completed by students online, generally from the comfort of their own homes. While this component of the training happens at the student’s own pace and can vary depending on the student’s prior knowledge and personal working pace, it’s highly recommended that you allow a full day to work through the course content and complete the relevant assessments.
Although there are no formal training requirements to do a Provide First Aid certificate, you will still need to meet some basic criteria to be eligible to take part in the course. To enrol in the course, you must:
Solis College provides all the training resources and specialist equipment you’ll need for the course, including training AED, and both an adult and infant resuscitation manikin. However, you will still need access to some basic items of common technology throughout the training. You’ll need
You’ll need.
During the course, students will be assessed through various methods. Successful completion of the course requires students to achieve a satisfactory result in each assessment. Students’ progress in the course will be evaluated through:
The HLTAID011 course from Solis College is nationally recognised training provided by a nationally accredited registered training organisation (RTO). Our first aid courses are recognised by almost all major employers and governing industry bodies throughout Australia.
It’s also worth noting that HLTAID011 is the current standard for workplace first aid courses – meaning it is one of the most widely accepted qualifications in Australia.
In Australia, the standard first aid course has gone through many updates and improvements. As such, although HLTAID011 is the current standard, you may encounter many references to older first aid qualifications such as HLTAID003 Provide First Aid, or Senior First Aid. Some of the previous qualifications that HLTAID011 now replaces include:
In all such cases, HLTAID011 should be accepted as the updated equivalent of those older training modules.
You should also note that this also applies to the training modules included as part of the HLTAID011 course (HLTAID009 and HLTAID010). If you are required to hold or complete any older equivalents of those certificates (such as HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support), completing the HLTAID011 first aid course will meet those requirements.
A CPR first aid course is a valuable resource in a wide range of careers and industries.
Some of the roles that require or can benefit from training in first aid include:
According to the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian peak clinical bodies, your HLTAID011 certificate (and the HLTAID010 certificate issued with it) is valid for three years from the date of issue.
After three years, you’ll need to re-enrol – or take a first aid refresher course – to remain up to date with your training.
You should note however, that the CPR component of the course is only valid for 12 months from the date of issue – after that, you’ll need to undertake a refresher for the CPR component of the course (HTLAID009). Again, this is according to ARC guidelines.
If your training needs for first aid are a little more specialised, you may be interested in some of Solis College’s other first aid training courses.
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
If your workplace specifically requires CPR training – or if your HLDAID009 certificate has lapsed and you need a refresher, this short course covers all the essentials of CPR. Over the course of a few hours, students learn to recognise and assess a potential cardiac arrest situation using the DRSABCD process, apply CPR effectively, correctly attach and operate an automated external defibrillator (AED), and hand over to emergency services when they arrive.
HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
Essential for those working in the teaching or childcare industries, the HLTAID012 course covers the full content of the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid qualification (which it includes), and also additional content specific to working with children and young people – including additional training on anaphylaxis and asthma, providing first aid to children and infants, and the paperwork needed when providing medical care to minors.
If you’re looking to further your career and improve your employment opportunities, first aid and CPR courses are a handy thing to have in your toolkit.
In addition to a wide range of professional roles that require a certificate in first aid (including everything from teaching to security), the training opens doors within many workplaces for more significant roles within a workplace, such as being a first aid officer for a department or floor.
Even in situations where there is no formal requirement to be trained in first aid, having your HLTAID011 certificate can still carry weight. It can give you an edge over other potential job candidates with similar experience. It can provide pathways to volunteer activities and programs, which could themselves provide valuable skills and experience. And in situations where first aid knowledge is required but there is no permanent first aid officer position, those skills can mean you’re often guaranteed a spot on the team.
Lastly, employees with first aid skills can be highly valued by employers purely for peace of mind. In 2017, a study by the Red Cross showed that only around 5% of Australians have formal training in first aid. If you’re one of the one-in-twenty Australians who can provide first aid in a medical emergency, that can make you a handy person to have around.
If you’ve already made up your mind and want to get started right away, you can read through our enrolment information for domestic or international students. Then, you can get started by filling out an online enrolment application.
Yes, Solis College started right here in Adelaide, and our main office is still right in the Adelaide CBD.
Since we started, we’ve forged strong partnerships with local South Australian workplaces, and have a growing reputation for excellence in training. So whether you’re doing a two year Diploma of Early Childhood or a two day first aid course, Adelaide businesses are recognising that Solis students are worth hiring.
Our Adelaide campus is right in the heart of the CBD, in one of the most accessible locations in the city for public transport.
If you’re anywhere in the greater Adelaide area, we’re not far away.
The CBD campus is just near the junction of King William Street and Waymouth Street. Being right on King William Street and a two-minute walk from Currie / Grenfell Street puts it right next to two of Adelaide’s largest bus route hubs. It’s also around 20m from the Pirie Street tram stop and a 10 minute walk (or a short tram ride) to Adelaide railway station. It’s one of the most accessible locations in South Australia for public transport.
If you’re on public transport, we may have the most accessible first aid course Adelaide has to offer.
If you prefer to take the car, there are numerous U-Parks and other paid parking facilities nearby, or to make it cheaper you could park in the city near one of the free tram stops (between the South Terrace stop, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, the Festival Plaza and the Botanic Gardens) and ride the tram to us for free.
