What is the ICT50220 Diploma of Information Technology?

This qualification equips students with the technical skills and underlying knowledge to manage, operate and maintain IT resources for organisations and businesses of both large and small. Students are trained to understand the fundamentals of computer science and the mechanics of software engineering, operating systems, internet and cloud technologies, and data management.

Solis College’s Diploma of IT also includes electives allowing students to specialise in Advanced Networking and Cybersecurity, opening up many highly specialised career avenues.

Advanced Networking equips students to manage and maintain complex network environments and resources for organisations with specialised needs, including configuring and managing virtual computing environments, identifying network vulnerabilities, and managing network security within an ICT network. Students learn the skills to enable organisations and businesses to share files and digital resources over wide distances without exposing business data or sensitive information.

Cybersecurity provides students with an understanding of digital security, and the knowledge to implement security solutions to detect, block and prevent attacks by hackers and malicious software. Students learn methods to secure a computer system against digital threats and cyber attacks, and protect an organisation from threats such as malware, malicious emails, phishing attacks, and other attacks to illegally gain access or steal data.

What Our Students Say About Us

How is the course presented?

The ICT50220 Diploma is provided to students in a blended format, combining both self-paced online learning and conventional face-to-face training. The online learning component allows students to study at their own pace using digital training resources from our student portal, while the face-to-face component of the study capitalises on this learning with direct instruction from our expert trainers and the opportunity to ask questions and clarify points of confusion.

Students will find themselves learning through the following methods:

  • Direct in-class instruction from qualified trainers
  • In-class exercises and discussion
  • Take away projects and research tasks – as individuals, or in a class group
  • Hands-on practical demonstrations
  • Online learning done at your own pace

How long will it take to complete the ICT50220 course?

The Diploma of IT is a comprehensive course covering a wide range of topics, and successful completion of the course requires a full 70 weeks. This period encompasses all aspects of the course, including orientation, in-class study, self-paced learning, holidays, and all assignments.

How much time will I need to invest each week?

Solis College’s IT Diploma is a full-time course. As such, it is expected that students will commit around 20 hours each week to attending classes, studying the course content, and completing assignments.

Can I get RPL for subjects I've studied before?

Yes. If any of the training units that make up the ICT50220 curriculum have been included in studies you’ve done previously, you can discuss a transfer of credit with our enrolment team. In most cases, this will mean you are not required to attend those components of the course, which may mean you can complete the course in a shorter time (course schedules allowing).

You should also talk to us if you have IT industry experience or training that gives you prior knowledge of the course content, as we may be able to grant you recognition of prior learning (RPL) for that area of knowledge. No need to train in something if you’re already an expert!

What other courses does Solis College run that could help me further my career?

College may have just the course you’re looking for.

Some FAQs By Our Students

While all training resources and equipment are provided by the college, you will need access to some common technology and digital resources for the duration of your course.

  • You'll need a personal email address, both to communicate with the college and to enable access to our online student portal. This can be a free email account from a provider like Google or Yahoo, set up specifically for that purpose.
  • You'll need a mobile phone (a smartphone for preference) with an active SIM card to contact and be contacted by the college.
  • You'll also need a laptop with WiFi connectivity, and current Microsoft Office software installed - or a close equivalent.

Students are assessed through a range of methods as the course progresses. Some of the assessment methods used in the different course units include:

  • Trainer observation during practical exercises and hands-on learning
  • Tests, quizzes, and other written in-class assignments
  • Take-away assignments and research tasks
  • Group projects

Completion of each unit requires a satisfactory result on each assessment for the course. You will need to ensure each and every assignment is completed and submitted to complete the training.

If you receive an unsatisfactory mark for any of your assignments, you do not automatically fail the unit in question. Instead, you will be given a chance to retake or re-submit the assessment to receive a more satisfactory grade. However, if you are not successful on your second attempt, you will need to retake that unit before you will be allowed to graduate the course.

As Solis College is an accredited Australian RTO, and the ICT50220 Diploma is a registered training course, it's recognised by all major IT industry employers and regulatory bodies throughout Australia. so when studying with us, you can be confident that your Diploma will carry weight anywhere on Australian soil - and probably many other places too!

The ICT50220 course is the most up-to-date version of the National Register of Vocational Education and Training's IT Diploma. However, it is the latest in a long line of similar training modules - most of which are now outdated. As such, it's not impossible that you may be asked if you hold one of the older qualifications - which the ICT50220 qualification now replaces.

Some of the predecessors of this course include:

  • Diploma of Information Technology - ICT50120, ICT50118, ICT50115, ICA50111, ICA50105

The Diploma of IT can open the door to a vast range of career paths and job opportunities.
