What is the Certificate IV in Disability Support?

The certificate 4 in disability support is a qualification that trains and equips students not only to provide individual support to people living with disability, but to empower them with more independence and self-reliance, encourage community participation and improve their overall well-being. Students are trained to utilise a person-centred approach working with and often contributing to the person’s individualised plan.

This may involve connecting clients with community services or service programs, sourcing advocacy and representation services, providing advice on government funding options, or helping them work towards future employment.

Graduates of the Cert IV in Disability Support are trained to work without direct supervision, and in some cases may be called upon to coordinate or supervise a small team.

What Our Students Say About Us

How is the course presented?

The course has elements of both face-to-face training and self-paced online learning. The online components of the course are completed in your own time, and at your own pace – provided the work is complete in time for your face-to-face classes (which build on that knowledge).

The in-person classes take place at our training venue in the heart of the CBD, working with one of our highly experienced instructors in classes of up to 20 students. The training will include:

  • Lecture-style presentations on the theory of each topic
  • Practical demonstrations from one of our expert trainers
  • Research tasks and projects, both individually and working with a group

In addition, each student will undertake a practical placement in the industry, observing current professionals at work and learning skills on the job.

How long will it take to complete the CHC43121 course?

The Certificate IV in Disability Support will require 26 weeks of full-time study. This includes orientation, self-paced learning, in-class training, holidays, assessments, placements, and graduation.

How much time will I need to invest each week?

It is expected that students will be available to study at least 20 hours a week – including assessment time. Your personal timetable for the course will have more specific information.

Additional time may be required for the practical placement. Students should expect to be on-site full time, Monday to Friday for the duration of the placement.

Can I get recognition of prior learning for subjects I've studied before?

If you have completed a similar qualification (such as the Certificate IV in Ageing Support), you may be granted recognition of prior learning (RPL) for course units you have already completed – or in some cases for recognised industry experience.

Units taken as part of the Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) do not count towards RPL – this learning is already assumed knowledge for the CHC43121 course.

Pathways to Employment

The Certificate IV in Disability Support is a superb choice for improving your employment prospects. According to Job and Skills Australia, In 2022, graduates of the course improved their odds of finding employment by more than 17% – with 93.74% finding work after graduating. That puts it on the top 20 list for all VET courses across Australia. Solis’ average is a little higher than that – 97.6%, to be precise.

It’s also on the top 20 list for highest improved income – with graduates earning an additional $17,756 on average after completing the course. Of course, this isn’t the sort of career you get into for the money, but it’s always nice to be able to pay the bills on time!

Not only is the course a pathway to a highly rewarding career supporting people in need, but it’s also an awesome opportunity to improve your circumstances and your prospects for the future.

What other courses could help me find work in this field?

If the Cert 4 in Disability Support isn’t right for you, Solis College has a range of other qualifications for working in the Care and Community Services industry.

CHC43015 – Certificate IV in Ageing Support

This course prepares students to work in professional aged care contexts. Whether in a residential, home, or community-based setting, graduates are trained to provide direct care and perform other specialised aged care tasks, often working with little direct supervision. They are capable of supporting other staff, and leading small teams.

CHC52021 – Diploma of Community Services

This training equips students for work in community services and provides them with specialised skills such as coordinating programs and case management. They can respond to unexpected difficulties in their roles, and find the information they need to resolve issues. Graduates are trained to work independently, with limited oversight from upper management. They are also qualified to manage or supervise teams of staff or volunteers.
