What is the CHC52021 Diploma of Community Services?

This qualification provides students with the training to work in the community services sector and equips them with specialised skills such as program coordination, service planning, and case management.

Graduates are trained to respond appropriately to unpredictable and complex problems and find the information they need to solve them. They may be required to connect clients with advocacy and representation services, or develop and lead community engagement strategies. They can work independently with only broad oversight from senior management, and may be called upon to supervise volunteers or manage a team of other community services workers.

What Our Students Say About Us

How is the course presented?

The course is a blended format, consisting of both face-to-face training and online learning.

Students will learn through:

  • In-class training from one of our expert instructors. The training is suited to a range of preferred learning styles and includes direct seminar-style instruction, practical hands-on demonstrations, group projects, and individual assignments.
  • Self-paced online learning, where students can work through our digital training materials at their own pace from the comfort of home.
  • A practical work placement, where students spend a number of weeks on-site at a live workplace, observing and assisting community service workers in their daily roles.

How long will it take to complete the CHC52021 course?

The community services diploma requires a total of 104 weeks to complete – including all face-to-face training, assignments, online learning, and work placement.

The work placement will require 400 hours spent in an active workplace, and students should ensure they are fully available for that period.

How much time will I need to invest each week?

The diploma is a full-time course, and it’s expected that students will commit around 20 hours a week to learning (including both face-to-face training and self-paced online learning).

The work placement requires a larger weekly time investment, and students should expect to be on-site full-time (normally Monday to Friday) for the entire placement.

Can I get credit for subjects I've studied before?

If you’ve completed some of the units for the CHC52021 diploma as part of another qualification, you may be able to apply for academic credit – meaning you might not need to retake those subjects.

Also, in some cases, you may have training or workplace experience that may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL).

This is assessed on a case-by-case basis. But if you have previous experience or training related to the units in the course, it’s probably worth getting in touch with us to discuss it.

Pathways to employment

For most people, the Diploma of Community Services provides all the qualifications they need to get into the workforce. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, in 2022, only 1.37% of Community Services graduates went on to study further VET courses – they already had what they needed to start work.

Solis College currently has a 97.6% employment rate for past students – we have a proven track record of helping people find employment.

This is partly through providing an excellent standard of education, but our connections within the industry are also a factor – it’s not unusual for students to be offered work at the workplace where they completed their practical placement, and many industry employers now regularly approach Solis College to enquire about potential future staff.

The diploma is a great pathway to a stable, dynamic, and satisfying career in community services.

What other courses could help me find work in this field?

Solis College has a range of course options that can help people find work in the community service and care industries. Some of the other courses we have on offer are:

CHC33021 – Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability or Ageing)

The Cert III in Individual Support is a qualification to train people to work in community and residential settings, and provide person-centred support to people who may require additional care due to ageing, living with disability, or some other reason.
